Reviews add review. Rating: 5. This movie is the origin of Harlock, and as such, it will always be intresting to Harlock and Matsumoto fans, and I only finished seeing it for that matter.
Animation The animation is not so good for his time, as being contemporary to Macross, it is overall worse in most senses, and only shines in the lack of repeating movements and long, quiet scenes that may overflow in a TV series. It is certainly no much better than the animation in the Harlock TV series, and yet it is four years newer.
Also it is rather bad to modern standars, no matter how much effort in ignoring it you put. In all, it is just mediocre. Sound Voices are not bad, yet unappealing. I can hardly say they are good, but they level up the music, which is quite bad. Not bad composed, certainly, but not quite right whith the story and special mood the film has. Story If this movie lacks in a particular place is here. It is about the events that make Harlock and his crew the men and women we seen the series, but it end up being just some moments, that although they are not unrelated, it cannot be considered an argument for a film.
I personally think that trying to get the most of each of these events the story of Arcadia, the meeting with Tsuchiro, etc none of them leads the film to any special place, and then it just that, some events that "produce" Harlock, not a story on his origins.
Character Harlock actually gets enough screen to get developed as character, even as he is introduced almost as bitter and experienced as seen in the TV series, I could say that he is re-motivated for hatred and solitude. Then Tsuchiro and Emeralda are way less treated, yet enough for eager fans.
Value It is absolutely non-rewatchable. Here I can say that even most Harlock fans would rather spend its time looking for new material than rewatching this movie out of boredom. Once you see why Harlock is the way he is, it just ends the only intresting side of the film. None of the other elements of this movie may call your attention except, maybe, nostallgy.
It is not a good introductory movie for newcomers, and not all of the Matsumoto fans out there will stand to the end, yet it is a good movie to see once, specially you get to the idea that it is not rather good. Everyone please excuse my bad english. Rating: 7. Approval: Arcadia of my Youth is about the the brave journey that a young captain makes, in world where aliens have enslaved mankind. It is a surprisingly humanising story, set in a stage where despair seems to be the norm. That saying, it was one of the earlier animes made, and thus if you're looking for bright, fresh and spunky visuals, this anime is not for you.
That said, however, I feel that Arcadia of my Youth's animation is pretty good for s anime. The most important part of any anime art - characters - is wonderfully drawn here.
Even by today's standards', the characters are exquisitely drawn. Though the aliens are pretty stereotyped, as "green men". The ships are also majestic-looking and give the proper atmosphere. The setting is gloomy, and hence the extensive use of dark colors. In fact, daylight is hardly seen.
Sound suffers, but this is probably due to the quality of the tape I watched. Music fits the theme symphonic. The voice actor for Captain Harlock is well cast, as he manages to portray a range of emotions, that perhaps only the older generation of japanese will know. The story kicks off with a hauntingly depressing and real scene of Harlock's ancestor, flying through a blizzard. Then, the story jumps back to modern time, where Harlock is captured by the alien empire that controls mankind now.
While some viewers may find that the plot is hard to follow, you'll find that in the later part of the show, values of honor, staunch heroicsm, and love are brought into the equation, which makes up somewhat for its somewhat confusing start. This does not try to place things under the veneer of happy resolutions to problems, but instead follows Harlock as he makes very hard decisions. The cast is not too badly developed. There is the customary funny-looking, joker kind of character who even has a touching story behind him!
Unfortunately, the relationships are not too deeply explored here, as the viewer is dragged from one action sequence to the next. Possibile che agli adattatori di Fininvest non siano stati capaci di capire questo?!!! Oltretutto quando Tochirou viene a conoscenza del nome del protagonista a sua volta si chiede se sia stato lui a scrivere quel libro che tanto lo stava appassionando, e Phantom F. Nel vecchio doppiaggio tutto il discorso era estremamente banalizzato, mentre in quello nuovo assume un significato poetico molto evocativo.
E qui, nel vecchio doppiaggio viene fatta dire un'altra clamorosa e ridicola fesseria ad Harlock, che rivolto a Tochirou che gli chiedeva chi fossero le persone di cui stava sentendo le grida, risponde: "Non ti preoccupare, sono partigiani francesi. Ti aiuteranno a scappare!
Non riesco proprio a capire per quale demenziale motivo gli adattatori di Fininvest abbiano commesso una sciocchezza simile! Dopo di che Harlock viene ferito ad una spalla e circondato dai nemici.
Il flashback finisce qui, senza darci di sapere cosa poi sia avvenuto effettivamente di lui. Vorrei solo spezzare una lancia in favore dei doppiatori della vecchia versione, il casto era ottimo e le voci ben assegnate, al pari di quello nuovo. Infatti in quel periodo il grandissimo Matsumoto era all'apice del suo successo e decise di regalarci questa meraviglia di film, come se sapesse che per lui sarebbe stato il canto del cigno della sua carriera.
Il film inizia con un ambientazione insolita, in cui vediamo protagonista un lontano antenato di Harlock su un vecchio aereo ad elica, intento a sfidare una le insidie letali di catena montuosa impervia. Sinceramente, tranne che dei buoni spunti utili a sottolineare il coraggio della stirpe, non ho notato molto utile ed interessante la prima parte.
Quando la trama torna nel futuro, gli Umanoidi sono ormai padroni sia del pianeta che dei terrestri, alcuni di loro sono addirittura in combutta con gli Umanoidi e spietati tanto quanto i loro invasori.
Nel frattempo, Harlock atterra con la sua vecchia Death Shadow sotto le minacce del comandante degli Umanoidi. Alcune scene in cui appaiono Esmeralda e Maya sono leggendarie, ma quella in cui l'Arkadia decolla con Maya sullo sfondo, valgono da sole la visione di questo capolavoro eterno. I fondali hanno una colorazione straordinaria e dettagliatissima, specialmente nel rappresentare luci e bagliori cosmici.
Le musiche sono buone e sempre azzeccate, pur non raggiungendo l'eccellenza. Come si fa a non mettere il massimo dei voti a questo film? Mi sento costretto!
Al momento di scrivere la recensione, credo che sia la quinta o la sesta volta che lo rivedo in pochi anni, da quando ho acquistato il DVD. Non ci sono storie: Harlock trasmette dei valori immensi. Ma detto questo, parliamo proprio del film.
Inoltre, il film fa anche da prequel alla seconda serie del pirata spaziale, "Capitan Harlock SSX", prodotta a ridosso della pellicola e parimenti collocata, nella cronologia generale dell'opera, prima della serie classica.
Lo sono comunque abbastanza e con soltanto lievi discordanze, a differenza di "Harlock Saga" e "Endless Odyssey", due vicende del tutto alternative alla serie classica. Harlock, un ufficiale della Federazione Terrestre, valoroso e malinconicamente legato a forti ideali di giustizia, non tollera questa situazione e decide di iniziare una ribellione contro il giogo degli invasori.
Nel film ci viene raccontato proprio il momento in cui Harlock e Tochiro si incontrano e diventano amici per la vita. Harlock fa amicizia con Zoll, valoroso guerriero di Tokarga, e fa sua anche la disperata causa di questo pianeta Tutte le volte perdo il conto di quanti siano i momenti che mi commuovono fino alle lacrime. Argh, che dolore! I personaggi hanno uno spessore incredibile, a partire ovviamente dal protagonista, malinconico e dannato, spaventosamente bello nella sua sofferenza.
Nel reparto dei personaggi maschili troviamo ancora due figure chiave. Le figure femminili sono finalmente rese nella loro particolare bellezza: Matsumoto disegna delle donne incantevoli, forse troppo simili tra di loro ma davvero indimenticabili.
Corpi slanciati all'inverosimile ma armoniosi, occhi stretti e affusolati, sempre malinconici, chiome lunghissime e vaporose: la serie classica aveva devastato quest'aspetto romantico, non riuscendo con i suoi scarsi mezzi tecnici a rendere giustizia a tanta bellezza. Il film, invece, ci riesce in pieno e credo che, tra tutti gli anime del leijiverse , sia quello con le donne meglio riuscite insieme ai primi due OAV di "Queen Emeraldas".
Nel film ci sono solo Tochiro e il primo ministro che rispettano, in parte, questa caratteristica, tra l'altro senza nemmeno esiti comici. Quasi tutte sono state appositamente composte per il film, con l'eccezione di due pezzi classici di altissima levatura utilizzati con un gusto incredibile: il primo movimento della "Sinfonia n.
Nello specifico: Occhio allo Spoiler! E ovviamente non si capisce nemmeno come Maya riesca a scappare da quella situazione.
