The original database, Sales , still exists on the server. Click OK after you've selected your disk backup file s. Under the Tail-log backup section, uncheck " Take tail-log backup before restore ". Not unchecking this option will result in the existing database, Sales , to change to the restoring state.
If you receive the following error message: "System. SqlError: The tail of the log for the database " Sales " has not been backed up. Then you likely did not enter the new database name from Step 6, above. Restore normally prevents accidentally overwriting a database with a different database.
This is an important safeguard. The following example restores a database to its state as of PM on May 30, and shows a restore operation that involves multiple log backups. The database does not currently exist on the server.
The two examples below perform a restore of Sales from a backup located in the Microsoft Azure storage service. The storage Account name is mystorageaccount. The container is called myfirstcontainer. For brevity, the first six steps are listed here once and all examples will start on Step 7.
A stored access policy has been created with read, write, delete, and list rights. The steps are mostly the same if a SQL Server credential already exists. The database Sales currently exists on the server. A SQL Server credential for the destination container must already exist as it cannot be created through the Restore task. The Sales database doesn't currently exist on the server. Skip to main content. This browser is no longer supported.

Note If the backup is taken from a different server, the destination server will not have the backup history information for the specified database. Note This list is only available when Device is selected. Start the restore. After the restore completes check the Microsoft Management Studio for the recovered database.
Figure 7 A. Check the correct target SQL server in this case the server is the second instance. Check for the restored database. If the database shows as "Loading" in Microsoft Management Studio and is inaccessible, see the Related Documents section for information on how to complete the restore and bring the database on-line. A Microsoft SQL Server database remains in a "Restoring" state and is inaccessible following a successful restore of the database.

For this to work correctly, the NetBackup Client Service on the SQL server can start with the local system account, but it does need specific rights.
Figure 1 If SQL integrated security is used, the Windows account of the currently logged in user is used for authentication. If integrated security is not used, login parameters are required, and are entered in the dialog box shown below.
This is necessary because frequently, SQL maintains a separate identification for users, as an additional layer of security. Please see the related article below for the SQL rights required for backup and restore of databases, and confirm the account specified has those rights. After clicking OK to the informational message about setting the database login parameters, the "Set database login parameters" window is displayed Figure 2.
Figure 2 Confirm the host name is the name of the SQL server. The backup contains only the actual data in the database and not any unused space. Therefore, the backup is usually smaller than the database itself. Performing a backup operation has minimal effect on transactions that are running; therefore, backup operations can be run during regular operations. You can perform a SQL Server backup with minimal effect on production workloads. After you decide what types of backups you require and how frequently you have to perform each type, we recommend that you schedule regular backups as part of a database maintenance plan for the database.
For information about maintenance plans and how to create them for database backups and log backups, see Use the Maintenance Plan Wizard. You do not have a restore strategy until you have tested your backups. It is very important to thoroughly test your backup strategy for each of your databases by restoring a copy of the database onto a test system.
You must test restoring every type of backup that you intend to use. We recommend that you document your backup and restore procedures and keep a copy of the documentation in your run book.
We also recommend that you maintain an operations manual for each database. This operations manual should document the location of the backups, backup device names if any , and the amount of time that is required to restore the test backups. Backup and restore operations can take a considerable amount of time due to the size of a database and the complexity of the operations involved.
For more information about extended events, see extended events. Use for short periods of time, exercise caution, and test thoroughly before implementing in production. Create a Maintenance Plan.
